The Sacrament of Confirmation

Our Bishop Ralph will be coming to Sacred Heart Church on Saturday 1 July 2017 at 6.30pm, to confirm those young people in Year 9 or above who want to complete their membership of the Church, and I would like to invite you to consider taking this important step in your personal faith development.

We have a team of adults who are ready to help you to prepare for the sacrament of Confirmation, including, Andrew Hartley, Ailsa Rodgers and Liz Yoxall with Deacon Tony.

The preparation sessions will be in Sacred Heart Presbytery, 6.30pm to 7.45pm, on eight Tuesday evenings, 7th, 14th, 21st, 28th March, 2nd, 9th and 23rd May and 6th June. We would like parents to come to the first session on 7th March for an opportunity to hear about the programme being followed and to ask any questions.

There will be an enrolment ceremony for the candidates during Sunday Mass on 12th March, an away-day on Saturday 13th May (TBC), and a final ‘Sending Forth’ ceremony in Mass with confirmation sponsors on 25th June, before Confirmation itself.

We would like to know how many people want to commit themselves to this programme and to be confirmed. Please discuss this with your family. If you wish to prepare for Confirmation this must be your own choice. Being confirmed means that you are taking on your own growth in faith. You are asking for a gift from God to help you foster the fruits of the Holy Spirit. Confirmation is also a witness to your belief in Christ and His church. By all means talk this over with your parents but the final decision must be yours and must be entered into freely. It may be that you do not feel ready to take this step yet.

If so, do not worry. There will be an opportunity to enrol in the future. There is an application form for you to complete and give back to me if this is something that you would like to do. I hope it is.

With best wishes,
