From Fr. Martin Trask, Sheffield North Dean

“Following Fr. Stan's retirement at the end of August, it has been agreed by the deanery priests that from September until the end of the year Fr Andrew Browne would cover the Sunday Mass at St. Mary's, Penistone and Sacred Heart/St. Marie's would cover the Sunday Masses at St. Ann's, Deepcar. During this period, a replacement may or may not be found.

In September, there will be a meeting planned either involving all the parishes of Sheffield or just the parishes of the Sheffield North deanery to continue the process that has already begun of planning a way ahead for our city/deanery.

We pray that during this time of change we may be guided by the Holy Spirit in discerning how to best shape our city/deanery so that vibrant and flourishing communities may continue to grow.

St. Thomas Moore, patron of our deanery, pray for us."

Pastoral Renewal Exchange, published monthly at St Joseph's Dinnington, is a resource for any parish and contains lots of information and thoughtful reflection on current topics.  We have been asked to supply content for the November issue.  Can you recommend articles that have inspired you (books, magazines, articles, internet etc) and email them before 31st July to sacredheart479@btinternet.com? An article that fits on to one or two sides of A4 paper would be ideal. Thank you.  The issue will also contain profiles of Sacred Heart Hillsborough's parish life.  If you would like to write up an account of your involvement or your experience, please get in touch.

“Living Simply” Thought for this Month. Eating less meat is widely recognised as beneficial for the world in which we live: think of the extra resources that are used up in the production of meat, and the intrinsic merits of eating your greens. Catholic tradition of abstaining from meat on Fridays has been given a fresh impetus in recent years, linking it once again with a spirit of self-restraint in keeping with the remembrance of Good Friday.  We are invited to think of this aspect of Living Simply as joined up thinking when it comes to a combination of lifestyle choices and spirituality. Here's a prayer for you:       “I believe in God and in nature as an inheritance which humanity has in common.  I enjoy the smell of the earth and the caress of the sun, the wind and the rain.  I enjoy the song of the birds and the murmur of the breeze that rustles the trees.   I like contemplating the crops, listening to the sigh of the corn fields, seeing the surge of the rice fields and waiting for the smell of ripe fruit.  I believe in all God's creatures, large and small.”  Erasmo Valiente, Jesuit Development Service, El Salvador.

Volunteering Opportunities  Would you like to consider helping as a married couple to prepare engaged couples for their life together?  It entails holding a series of three or four evenings in your home with an engaged couple, chatting in a friendly way about relationships and communication.  An information evening will be held in the early autumn, led by the married couples who do this at present, to share some insights into what is involved.  If you would like to explore the possibility, please let us know, without commitment.

There will also be training opportunities in the autumn for new eucharistic ministers and readers at Mass.  If you would like to put your names forward.  Ring the Presbytery please on 2343580.  Thank you.

Further Announcements

Gift Aid:  The tax the parish can reclaim from HMRC is an important source of income and we would like to encourage any taxpayers who do not currently make their offering under Gift Aid to consider doing so. It is the best way of increasing your offering without it costing you more, since currently, the government will increase each £1 of your personal offering by a further 25p.For the parish to reclaim the tax on your offering, you, the taxpayer, need to make a Gift Aid declaration and we, the parish, need to have a record of the date and amount of your offerings. Offerings can be by standing order, cheque or cash in a numbered offertory envelope. Your Gift Aid Declaration will cover all donations recorded by the parish, including for the Food Pantry. You will find Gift Aid declaration forms at the back of church near the hymn books. When you have completed the form, please hand it either to our the presbytery or drop it through the letterbox. Please be assured that the administration of Gift Aid is completely confidential. If you have any questions about about Gift Aid, please call Janina Klapas on 2312300. If you are considering making a gift to the Church in your will, information can be obtained by contacting the presbytery. Thank you for your continuing support. It is very much appreciated. Offertory envelopes are at the back of church.  If you want to start using envelopes please let us know.

Carmel Care: How would you like to be a 'musical volunteer'? Carmel Care Centre is looking for people with musical or singing talent, to join us on Wednesday mornings between 10.30-12.30 to make music! If you have more time you can even stay and have lunch. We especially need someone to play the piano. You would also be very welcome if you have ‘green fingers’ to help weeding, planting and watering the garden at Carmel on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Contact 0114 2335727172 Dykes Hall Road S6 4GS

Parish Emergency Food Pantry: The people who rely on the food pantry are very grateful for your support. The number of  requests for help made at the door is currently running at about 50 per week. If you wish to contribute to the food pantry, there are three ways to do this: 1. Purchase food and bring it to the presbytery. Canned and packaged goods are best and items requiring little or no preparation are most popular. 2. Make regular donations by standing order with a reference of “food pantry”. The parish bank account details are: HSBC, sort code 404107, account number 21094319. 3.Donate by cash / cheque in an envelope marked “food pantry” and put it in the offertory basket. Please note: all cheques should be made payable to “Diocese of Hallam – Sacred Heart”. There are some marked envelopes at the back of church for this purpose. Many thanks for all your help, including new standing orders received. It really is much appreciated by local people in need.
