John Reilly's funeral Mass will be held on Thurs 1 February at 1pm,then cremation at Grenoside. May he rest in peace.

Liturgy and Spirituality meeting: Thursday 25 January at 8.00pm in the presbytery

First Holy Communion preparation programme begins on Sunday 28 January at 9.00am in the hall. 

The Sacrament of Confirmation will be celebrated on Saturday 30 June at 6.30pm for young people in year 9 and upwards, and for adults, including those preparing for marriage who have not yet been confirmed. Year 9 candidates for confirmation: Please collect your named envelope containing your letter of invitation, details of the preparation programme, and application form from the back of church. There is also a stock of blue application forms at the back of church if your name is not included in the named envelopes.

Retreat Weekend for young adults (20s and 30s).Theme: Prayer and Discernment. Dates: 26 to 28 January 2018. Location: Salford. The weekend is organised by the sisters, Faithful Companions of Jesus (FCJ).There will be input, prayer, reflection and discussion with other young adults. Cost £40. 'Help in Hillsborough' The Companion Café that takes place on Tuesday mornings in the extension of Hillsborough Tabernacle Congregational Church has changed its name to 'Help in Hillsborough'. We continue to help people with on-line and paper forms and signpost them to other local organisations. With the departure of the Citizen's Advice Centre we have become busier but thankfully we've been blest with new volunteers. Our users comment that our open, friendly manner is very different from other agencies. Sometimes people just need reassurance that they've understood a letter correctly. So far we've helped with Job Seekers Allowance, Housing Benefit, Attendance Allowance, Blue Badge, Bus Pass, Passport Forms and signposted people to legal aid, debt advice and the Foodbank.

The vicar of St John's adds: “we still run a Citizens Advice session on Monday to Wednesday from our church office at the rear of St John's Vicarage (Walkley Lane entrance). Open 10.00am-12.00pm. Appointments not required - just come early”.

Are you up for a challenge in 2018? Why not get a team together and join St Wilfrid’s Centre Sleep Out 2018 on Friday 16 March and help raise vital funds for St Wilfrid’s Centre. Our Sleep Out 2018 challenges you to get out of your comfort zone and sleep on the floor of the Abbeydale Picture House. It’s the first time this iconic Sheffield landmark has ever been used for a sleep out fundraiser. We are looking for teams or individuals to join us for the night! In return for raising a minimum of £50 in sponsorship per person, you will be treated to an evening of live music and drama, including a showcase performance by some of the charity’s own clients. You’re welcome to bring your family or friends along to this part of the night, with tickets sold separately from 29th January via our website and www.ticketsforgood.co.uk.Please note that the whole event is alcohol free but there will be an alcohol free cocktail bar! It’ll be a great event to bring the family to (age 16 plus for the Sleep Out and 12 plus for the evening entertainment). To join us, register online via our website www.stwilfridscentre.org/events/sleepout2018. Places for the Sleep Out are limited so be sure to register soon. The registration fee is £15 pp (includes entertainment, light supper and breakfast).

Parish Emergency Food Pantry: The people who rely on the food pantry are very grateful for your support. The number of  requests for help made at the door is currently running at about 50 per week. If you wish to contribute to the food pantry, there are three ways to do this: 1. Purchase cans and put them in the box at the back of church. 2. Make regular donations by standing order with a reference of “food pantry”. The parish bank account details are: HSBC, sort code 404107, account number 21094319. 3.Donate by cash / cheque in an envelope marked “food pantry” and put it in the box at the back of church. Please note: all cheques should be made payable to “Diocese of Hallam – Sacred Heart”. There are some marked envelopes at the back of church for this purpose. Many thanks for all your help, including new standing orders received. It really is much appreciated by local people in need.

Can you help? CAFOD in Hallam is desperate for new people to join our schools’ team. It’s a fun and rewarding role that allows you to share your faith and concern for social justice with chidren and young people. Full training and support is given so all you need is a confidence and ability to communicate with groups of children, plus some free time during the school day. Eucharistic Pilgrimage and Congress “Adoremus” Liverpool 7-9 September 2018

The bishops of England and Wales will hold a National Eucharistic Pilgrimage and Congress in Liverpool this year. Eucharistic Congresses are gatherings of clergy, religious and laity which promote an awareness of the central place of the Eucharist in the life and mission of the Church. Participants will engage in a series of sessions focusing on different dimensions of the Eucharist and the daily celebration and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.

The Echo Arena in Liverpool - which can accommodate 10,000 pilgrims - will be the home to a six-hour stage programme on the second day of the Congress, which will include a Congress Mass, keynote speakers and a drama highlighting the beauty of reverence and devotion. The day will conclude with Adoration.

Gift Aid: The tax the parish can reclaim from HMRC is an important source of income and we would like to encourage any taxpayers who do not currently make their offering under Gift Aid to consider doing so. It is the best way of increasing your offering without it costing you more, since currently, the government will increase each £1 of your personal offering by a further 25p.For the parish to reclaim the tax on your offering, you, the taxpayer, need to make a Gift Aid declaration and we, the parish, need to have a record of the date and amount of your offerings. Offerings can be by standing order, cheque or cash in a numbered offertory envelope. Your Gift Aid Declaration will cover all donations recorded by the parish, including for the Food Pantry. You will find Gift Aid declaration forms at the back of church near the hymn books. When you have completed the form, please hand it either to our the presbytery or drop it through the letterbox.
