THE EVIDENCE OF GRACE

(Fr. Michael’s Homily)

Advent: The Season of Great Expectations; Jesus is Coming

Much of the season of Advent is spent in waiting for something or someone to come. For some, the season is marked by a delicious anticipation of good things to enjoy. For others there are very many great expectations of various things hanging in the air.

Christmas is coming . . .Santa Claus is coming . . . Snow is coming. Another year is almost upon us. There are many things to do, so many gifts to buy and wrap and deliver. . . So many meals to prepare and so many decorations . . . so many lights . . . so many . . . Too many! We could lose the meaning of the season in these undertakings. We must set our heart and look for Jesus (Lk 2:45).

In her wisdom the Church, through the scripture readings for Advent gathers the preoccupied thoughts, the anxieties, wandering hopes and scattered energies of each one of us to focus them once again on the “reason for the season”: Jesus who comes! Jesus our great expectations and our redemption who is at hand.

Advent celebrates the coming, into time and space and human flesh, of Jesus, not as a past event but also as a present experience and future joy yet to be fully realized. We know that Jesus will come because he is already here. He remains present in the sacred word; in the living bread; in the sacramental moments which mark the passages of our lives; in the midst of the community gathered in his name at prayer; and through the abiding power of the Holy Spirit. Indeed, God has given this gift in Jesus. He has come; he is here, and he will come again. In 1John 3:1, we are reminded: “Think of the love the Father has lavished on us, by letting us be called God’s children; and that is what we are”. And if we are His children, then we are His heirs also: heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ; joint-heir with Christ sharing His inheritance with Him (Rom 8:17). This is who we are!

Please join us for refreshments in the hall after Mass

FURTHER ANNOUNCEMENTS

Gift Aid: The tax the parish can reclaim from HMRC is an important source of income and we would like to encourage any taxpayers who do not currently make their offering under Gift Aid to consider doing so. It is the best way of increasing your offering without it costing you more, since currently, the government will increase each £1 of your personal offering by a further 25p.For the parish to reclaim the tax on your offering, you, the taxpayer, need to make a Gift Aid declaration and we, the parish, need to have a record of the date and amount of your offerings. Offerings can be by standing order, cheque or cash in a numbered offertory envelope. Your Gift Aid Declaration will cover all donations recorded by the parish, including for the Food Pantry. You will find Gift Aid declaration forms at the back of church near the hymn books. When you have completed the form, please hand it either to the presbytery or drop it through the letterbox. Please be assured that the administration of Gift Aid is completely confidential. If you have any questions about Gift Aid, please call Janina Klapas on 2312300. If you are considering making a gift to the Church in your will, information can be obtained by contacting the presbytery. Thank you for your continuing support. It is very much appreciated. Offertory envelopes are at the back of church. If you want to start using envelopes, please let us know.
