THE EVIDENCE OF GRACE

(Fr. Michael’s Homily)

May They Become Perfectly One

Jesus' prayer concludes with a petition for the unity among all Christians who profess that Jesus Christ is Lord. Jesus prays for all men and women who will come after him and follow him as his disciples (John 17:20). In a special way Jesus prays here for each one of us that as members of his body the church we would be one as he and his Father are one. The unity of Jesus, the only begotten Son of God, with the eternal Father is a unity of mutual love, service, and honour, and a oneness of mind, heart, and spirit. The Lord Jesus calls each one of his followers into this unity of mutual love, respect, service, honour, and friendship with all who belong to Christ.

In the first reading we see the fresh eagerness of St Stephen: 'Stephen, filled with the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, ....I can see heaven thrown open' he said 'and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.' This was indeed the springtime of the Church. We need to revisit this, each year to be revived by the Spirit. When our own spirits are jaded and tired-out, we need the spirit and the Bridegroom to say to us 'Come'.

In light of the Word of God which we have been listening to, and which has guides us to pray for Christian Unity, we can truly affirm that all of us, believers in Christ, have been called to proclaim the mighty works of God. Beyond the differences which still separate us, we recognize with joy that at the origin of our Christian life there is always a call from God Himself. Let us with courage listen to the voice of the Lord saying: Come, come together as one. We ask the Lord: Renew in us the power of the Holy Spirit that we may be a sign of that unity and a means of its growth. Increase in us a fervent love, respect, and care for all our brothers and sisters who believe in Jesus Christ. Amen
