(Fr. Michael’s Homily)

Pentecost: Witness and Testimony

Today we celebrate the birth of the Church, Pentecost. God through the outpouring of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, gave manifold charisms to the Church. Every Charismatic gift is a manifestation of God’s Power and Presence given freely for God’s honour and glory and for the service of others. And scripture declares that the Holy Spirit distributes spiritual gifts to each one individually as He wills (1Cor 12:11). For effective witnessing therefore we must desire, pray for and exercise the gifts in us by the Spirit. Our witnessing must be a testimony, a testament and a celebration of deeds we have seen, wondrous words we have heard and great events we are re-living. We must therefore fan into flames the gifts received by radical and total commitment to Christ and the Spirit leading (2Tim 1:6).

Pope John XXIII Prayed; “God grant, that the Lord would still increase His rain of Charisms to make the Church fruitful, beautiful, marvelous and capable of inspiring respect, even the attention and the amazement of the profane world”. Blessed John Paul II the Great says: Open yourselves to the gifts of the Spirit.!

Welcoming the Holy Spirit is the core of this vast spiritual revival. To welcome Him is to experience the Spirit’s anointing in our Prayer and Power in our apostolic service, to welcome him is to experience consolation in our trials and light upon the choices we make; To welcome Him is to experience renewal, reactivation and total transformation. He comes, giving us a desire to praise God and a sweet taste of Praise, leading us to discover a new joy in life, opening our minds to scriptures, teaching us to proclaim Jesus as our LORD; giving us courage in new and difficult task. Whatever the Spirit touches, the Spirit changes; commit your life to the Father and the Father will commit his Spirit to you. Now, Receive the Holy Spirit!!! Let end this reflection in the inspired words of Bishop Ignatius di Latakia: “without the Holy spirit God is far away, Christ stays in the past, the Gospel is a dead letter, the Church is simply an organization, authority a matter of domination, mission a matter of propaganda, liturgy no more than evocation, Christian living a slave morality.

But with the Holy Spirit;

The Cosmos is resurrected and groans with the birth-pangs of the Kingdom, the risen Christ is there, the Gospel is the power of life, the church shows forth the life of the Trinity, authority is liberating service, mission is a Pentecost, the liturgy is both a memorial and anticipation, and human action is deified.” May we experience renewal daily through the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Please join us for refreshments in the hall after Mass
