THE EVIDENCE OF GRACE
(Fr. Michael’s Homily)
I Believe in the Resurrection
The Sadducees in today’s Gospel with the riddle about seven brothers and a childless widow, tried to question the faith in the resurrection for which the seven brothers and their mother died in the first reading. The Sadducees came to Jesus with a test question to make the resurrection look ridiculous. The Sadducees, unlike the Pharisees, did not believe in immortality, nor in angels or evil spirits. Their religion was literally grounded in an earthly image of heaven. The Maccabean martyrs chose death—tortured limb by limb, burned alive—rather than betray God’s Law. Their story is given to us in these last weeks of the Church year to strengthen us for endurance, as model of making sacrifice for our faith, and that our feet might not falter but
remain steadfast on His paths. The Maccabeans died hoping that the “King of the World” would raise them to live again forever (2 Maccabees 14:46).
And we have even greater reason than they for our hope in the resurrection. For, Jesus Christ, the firstborn from the dead, the one who has risen from the dead has given us His word—that He is the God of the living, that when we awake from the sleep of death we will behold His face, and we will be content in His presence. The ultimate proof of the resurrection is the Lord Jesus and his victory over death when he rose from the tomb. Before Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, he exclaimed: "I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in me, though he dies, yet shall he live, and whoever lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?" (John 11:25). Jesus asks us the same question. Do you believe in the resurrection and in the promise of eternal life with God? As N.T. Wright states “The resurrection completes the inauguration of God’s kingdom. . .. It is the decisive event demonstrating that God’s kingdom really has been launched on earth as it is in heaven. The message of Easter is that God’s new world has been unveiled in Jesus Christ and that you’re now invited to belong to it.”
You are all welcome to join us for refreshments in the hall after Mass
Volunteers Needed – Carmel Care Lunch Club: 172 Dykes Hall Road S9 4GS: Carmel Care is seeking to recruit two volunteers to set up and run a Lunch Club for adults at Carmel Care. If you are aged 18 or over, able to relate to people with respect and understanding, and willing to give a few hours each week we would like to hear from you. For more information please contact Anne Jenkinson (Co-ordinator) email@example.com
Please consider making your offertory donations to the Parish via Standing Order: Parishioners may prefer to give regularly by standing order since this is an efficient and convenient method. There’s no need for cash or to write cheques. If you would like to donate by standing order, please set this up with your bank. The parish bank account details are Sort Code: 40-41-07 Account no. 21094319. Whether you give by envelope or by standing order, if you are a taxpayer the best way to increase the value of your donations, without it costing you anymore, is to complete a Gift Aid declaration. Gift Aid allows the church to claim back from the government on your behalf 25p for every £1 you donate, boosting the value of the donation by a quarter. Gift Aid declaration forms are also available at the back of church. Please place completed forms in the Sacristy. As a church community, we are encouraged to increase the amount we give to support our church as income is failing to keep up with growing expenses. Please consider if it is possible to give a bit more. Thank you for everything you already give and do in any way.
For Mass Booking: Please contact Richard on 2343580 or firstname.lastname@example.org to arrange a Mass for a date of your choice, or give your request in writing to Fr Michael.
