Children’s Liturgy at Sacred Heart

Who is it for?

Our children’s liturgy is a fun way for children 0 – 8 years old to start to understand the Gospel and to get to know other children in the Parish.

When and what time?

Children’s liturgy takes place during the Sunday 11am Mass most weekends during term-time. Sign-up to our Children’s Liturgy mailing list for regular updates on dates and activities.

What do they do?

Our children’s liturgy is designed to give children and their parents an opportunity to explore the week’s Gospel message in a fun and age appropriate way. We have two liturgy groups, one for 0 – 5 year olds (and their parents) and one for 6 – 8 year olds. Children’s liturgy takes place while the liturgy of the word (first reading, psalm, second reading and Gospel) and homily takes place in church – usually around 25 minutes. The children process back in to church in time for the offertory and often present back to the priest the pictures or activities that they have been working on.

Early Years (0 – 5 Year Olds)

Our 0 – 5 year old group involves craft, songs and interactive activities. Everyone is invited to take part and have fun. The 0 – 5 group takes place in the school hall and provides a relaxed environment for children and parents. We ask that each child is accompanied by a parent.

6 – 8 Year Olds

Our 6 – 8 year old group involves reflections on the Gospel, prayers, role play, discussion and interactive activities to help children to understand the Gospel message and to make sense of this together. The 6 – 8 group also takes place in the school hall. Parents do not need to accompany children in this group.

Leaving / Returning to Church

  1. Can all children please go to the front of church when invited to do so at the start of Mass so Fr Michael can say a little blessing before they file out to the school hall.
  2. All the children then walk over to the school hall.
  3. Someone will come get the groups when it’s nearly time to go back to church.
  4. All children will then wait in the porch until the offertory procession. Liturgy children to FOLLOW the procession to the front of church.
